maryecronin1@gmail.com BioThe Bronx, New York...... my first reading memory is deciphering the brash, blocky headlines of the Daily News. I fell in love with writing in first grade, and I've been writing in some form or other ever since. Although my family left the Bronx when I was 12, city living still suffuses my writing and imagination. One of my latest writing projects is a poetry collection for children about growing up in a firefighting family. It's called FIREFIGHTER'S KID, and it won the 2007 Kimberly Colen Memorial Grant, awarded by the SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) in New York.
My work life has been fun and varied, from public relations to public education. I have taught preschool, kindergarten, special education, and on the college level. I have an undergraduate degree in Journalism, a Master's in Education, and I am currently pursuing my MFA in Writing for Children at Vermont College of Fine Arts.
I now live near the ocean on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. I write poetry for children, as well as commentaries for our local NPR station. I also teach early childhood education at the college level. When not teaching or writing, I'm enjoying my family, walking my dog, or curling up with a good book!
